When did Christianity come to India?

Christianity is believed to have arrived in India during the first century AD, soon after the time of Jesus Christ. According to tradition, the apostle Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, is said to have traveled to India and established a Christian community there. This community, known as the Saint Thomas Christians or Syrian Christians, has a long history in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

While the exact details and timeline of Thomas' journey and his activities in India are debated, there is evidence of a Christian presence in India as early as the second century. The Saint Thomas Christians practiced a unique form of Christianity that incorporated elements of both Eastern and Western Christian traditions.

Over the centuries, other Christian groups and denominations, such as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, also arrived in India through colonial missions and trade routes. They established churches and missionary organizations, contributing to the spread of Christianity in various parts of the country.

Today, Christianity is one of the major religions in India, with diverse denominations and a significant number of followers. While the majority of Christians in India are found in the southern states, there are Christian communities and churches across the country.
